Two things decide whether a decal looks right on your wall: picking a size that suits the space, and giving the surface an hour to be ready. Neither is hard.

Measuring your wall

Measure the widest and tallest points of the area you want to fill, not the whole wall. Then subtract a few inches on each side so the design has room to breathe — a decal that reaches the edges reads as wallpaper, not artwork.

Before you commit, mark the outline on the wall with painter's tape. Live with it for a day. It's the single best way to avoid ordering a size that felt right on screen and looks wrong in the room.

Choosing a size

A few starting points that work in most rooms:

  • Above a crib or bed — aim for roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it.
  • A blank feature wall — go larger than instinct says. Under-scaling is the most common regret.
  • Sets and scattered designs — plan for the spread, not the individual pieces. A set needs breathing room between elements.
  • Murals — measure the full wall including any area behind furniture, then decide where the panels land.

What your wall needs to be

Smooth painted drywall is ideal. Light texture works. Very rough brick, popcorn ceilings, and heavy orange-peel texture will let the decal lift at the high points — we don't recommend them.

Paint needs to be fully cured, which takes about three weeks after the last coat. Applying to fresh paint is the one mistake that can pull colour off on removal.

Wipe the surface with a barely damp cloth, then let it dry completely. Skip household cleaners and anything with oil in it — the residue stops the adhesive gripping.

Installing a decal set

  1. Lay the pieces out on the floor first, in the arrangement you want. Photograph it so you have a reference.
  2. Mark your top and centre points on the wall with a pencil and a level.
  3. Peel the backing away slowly at a low angle. If a piece resists, stop and take a different angle rather than pulling harder.
  4. Place from the top down, pressing outward from the centre to push air toward the edges.
  5. Smooth the whole piece with a credit card wrapped in a soft cloth.
  6. If there's a transfer layer on top, peel it away slowly at a sharp angle once the decal is down.

You can lift and reposition within the first minute or so. After 24 hours the bond sets firmly, and it's no longer designed to move.

Installing a mural

Murals arrive in panels. One person, one afternoon — no professional needed.

  1. Unpack and lay the panels out in order. Check that the pattern matches at the seams before anything touches the wall.
  2. Start with the leftmost panel. Use a level for the first one — every panel after it follows that line, so getting it plumb matters more than getting it fast.
  3. Peel the top few inches of backing, position, and press. Then work down, peeling and smoothing as you go rather than removing the whole backing at once.
  4. Overlap each subsequent panel to the guide marked on its edge.
  5. Trim excess at the ceiling and skirting with a sharp blade against a straight edge.

Installing a dance floor decal

Install one to two hours before the floor opens — not the night before.

  1. The floor must be clean, dry, and fully sealed. Sweep, then mop, then let it dry completely.
  2. Find the centre of the floor and mark it. Dance floor decals read as off-kilter fast if the centring is out.
  3. Roll the decal out from the centre, smoothing outward with a squeegee or a soft broom.
  4. Press all edges down firmly — edges are where heels catch.

Rated for one full day of commercial use, including dancing in heels. Afterwards, peel it up by hand. No chemicals, no scraping, no residue on a sealed floor.

Taking a decal down

Peel slowly, at a low angle, back against itself rather than straight out from the wall. Warming it gently with a hairdryer softens the adhesive and makes stubborn areas release cleanly.

On fully cured paint, nothing should come away with it. Decals are removable but not reusable — once it's off the wall, it won't go back up.

Living with it

Dust with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and a light touch. Never soak a decal, and never use an abrasive or a solvent cleaner on it.
